A Starters Guide to Stretching

You know that magical feeling when you wake up in the morning and take a long full-body stretch? There’s nothing like it! However, that isn’t the most important stretch of your day. Whether you’re extremely active or you like to exercise here and there, stretching is very important for everyone. With the help of this article, we compiled a list of 5 concrete reasons as to why you should incorporate stretching into your daily routine.

  1. Stretching will help your flexibility. As we get older, we become less and less flexible. While this may not seem like a big deal, it can make simple tasks and daily movements more challenging. Increasing your flexibility will overall make movements easier for you, and you’ll be less likely to pull a muscle!
  2. Stretching improves your performance in physical activities. Have you ever tried to begin your workout and your legs are completely stiff? Or maybe it’s even a simple walk around the block and you’re just dragging. Loosening up those muscles by stretching before your workout will help you be able to move better and more efficiently.
  3. Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles. The reason that this is important is that it will help your muscles recover faster, along with a good diet of course! Especially if you are weight training, make sure you are taking care of your muscles before and after your workout.
  4. Stretching is a great form of stress relief. If you can dedicate 5-10 minutes a day to stretching in silence, it can be a really good form of meditation or mindfulness. It may be the only quiet time you have in your day. We could all use a bit more quiet time, right?
  5. Stretching can help your posture. When your muscles are stiff it can be easy to alter the way you sit throughout the day. Keep stretching those muscles and work on your posture every day!

If you’re unsure where to even begin, start with just 5 minutes a day, morning and evening. It’ll be a great way to begin your day, and it can also help you wind down before hitting the hay. Try to hold each stretch for 30 seconds or longer, to really get the full effect. Being healthy is more than just working out. It’s about eating right, and fully taking care of your body.
