8 Ways to Get More Steps Throughout Your Day

The weather is cooling down and fall has arrived. Before we are cooped up this winter we wanted to give you a list of 8 ways to get more steps in throughout your day, while you can still enjoy the great outdoors. 

  1. Skip the laps around the parking lot to find the closest spot, instead park in the farthest spot and walk to your final destination!
  2. Inquire about a standing desk at work. You will be surprised how easy it is to stay sitting all day unless you’re already standing up. It will encourage added movement throughout your day.
  3. If a standing desk isn’t an option, get up once every hour and walk around the building, or walk to your favorite coffee shop after lunch for an afternoon pick-me-up.
  4. Skip the elevator, take the stairs!
  5. If you’ve been considering getting a dog… this is one of the best excuses to get moving. You might as well tire them out on a long walk before and after work!
  6. Commuting by bus? Try getting off the bus one-stop early and walk the rest of the way.
  7. Meet up with a friend and walk around the lake, or even around your neighborhood!
  8. Walk to a local restaurant or cafe for dinner instead of driving.

Without overwhelming you with a list of 20, we thought this would be a great place to start. If you have a Fitbit, Apple Watch, or another device that tracks your steps, create a competition with a friend. Whoever gets the most steps throughout the month wins a free drink, or maybe a free dinner. Make it fun, and get those steps in, you’ll thank yourself!

Why is it important to increase your steps each day? If you aim to get around 10,000 steps a day, that should equate to 30 minutes of exercise, which is recommended. The benefits range from slowing mental decline and lowering blood pressure, to weight loss and improving sleep. If 10,000 is intimidating for you, start with 5,000 and work your way up.
