Mental Benefits of Sleep

To follow up last week’s blog post on the physical benefits of sleep, we felt it would be equally important to mention the mental benefits as well. Sleep deprivation can lead to a variety of issues, so understanding the importance of good quality sleep can really change things for you! Here are three reasons as to why you should focus on sleep for your mental health and everyday life:

Sleep helps improve your memory: Think back to when you were in school. Trying to retain any information when you were feeling tired and run down, it felt nearly impossible. It should be no surprise but research suggests that proper amounts of sleep can help your brain stay sharper and boost your power of recall. If only we valued our sleep more back then!

Sleep helps improve your mood: A study found that a lack of sleep can make it hard for you to regulate your emotions. Most of us can relate to this one. Something that wouldn’t bother you on a normal day, can flip your mood upside down in a moment when you’re sleep-deprived. Having the proper amount of sleep can make everyone more enjoyable to be around.

Sleep helps you focus on everyday tasks: If you don’t get enough sleep for yourself, do it for your job. Studies show that sleep can help you remain sharp and alert throughout the course of your day, making your to-do list feel a lot more manageable. If you have the ability to nap during the day, that may be your secret weapon in finding your focus and attention!
