Today’s Calhoun Beach Club Feature: Personal Trainer, Nick! We asked Nick a couple questions and these were his answers:

How long have you been training? I’ve been a Personal Trainer for 4 years now, and I love it because it allows me to share my knowledge of healthy movement patterns and strength training to improve the lives of others.

How do you keep active and healthy lifestyle? I keep active by incorporating exercise into my daily routine. I try to have a plan each day for whether I focus on cardio or strength training, but mostly it’s just something I enjoy doing for it’s own sake.

What are your favorite things to do at the gym? My favorite warm-up at the gym is the rowing machine. Between pushing with your legs, pulling with your arms and bracing with your core, it’s a great way to get the heart rate up and blood flowing! I’m also partial to strength training, which I like to keep simple. I’ll focus on squats, bench press, pull-ups and dead-lifts most days, with the intention of progressing to incrementally heavier weights every 6 weeks or so. Another thing I enjoy at the gym are group exercise classes. There’s usually a bit of healthy competition that makes you push harder than you would if you were on your own. Whether I’m participating or teaching, I love experiencing that energy!

Finally, what’s one piece of advice for those wanting to get in shape? For those wanting to get in shape, take it slow! The first thing that improves when starting a strength training program is the neuromuscular connection. Perfecting good form with lighter weights and higher repetitions will make the progression to heavier weights faster with less chance of injury or worsening muscle imbalances.

Thanks for the awesome advice, Nick!
